As the exit polls results were broadcasted on the news, Foran High School students were tuning in to major news stations. The final results of the Presidential election were Trump, winning with 276 electoral votes. Clinton was behind Trump with 218 electoral votes. Gary Johnson gained three percent of the popular vote, with Jill Stein behind him with one percent of the popular vote.
Senior Steven Soerenson said, “It’s been pretty nerve-racking all day knowing how important this election is to the future of our country. Both sides have had a lot of bad publicity and it’s going to be interesting how it turns out. During some free time today I looked up the polls because I was curious on how the election was going so far.”
Junior Julia Kopestein stated, “It was exciting to know that people were voting all across the country today (yesterday) because it’s something so unique to American politics.”
Although many students are not legally eligible to vote in the Presidential election, many still shared their political opinions and thoughts. Student government even held a mock election, with Trump winning.
Senior Josh Henderson said, “I would vote for Trump, but that’s personally who I feel is the lesser of two evils. I dislike both of them, but I agree with more of Trump’s policies over Hillary’s; like implementing protectionism and securing the borders.”
Senior Nick Foss says, “I feel pretty good about Trump winning. He’s not as bad as Hillary, yet not as good as Reagan.”
While many celebrated the win for Republican nominee, Donald Trump, many saw this as a historic day in American history. Many view this day as a revolutionary change in American politics, foreshadowing even bigger changes through the presidency, Congress, and the Supreme Court. However impactful this change is, there is a lot of controversy over if it will be a positive change or a negative one.
Senior Angelo Simonelli says, “I think this day will affect all of America, not only Foran and Milford. This is a truly revolutionary pick as our President coming from out of the establishment and it is what America has needed and wanted for many years now. ”
Senior Parker Callahan says, “I think it’s historical because our country has just voted for racism. Voted for sexual assault. Voted for incompetence. Voted for discrimination and violence.”
Junior Mackenzie Coughlin says, “I think this will be an era of overwhelming legislation put in place by the Republican party. I believe it’s going to have a very negative effect on our nation.”
The results are in: Trump is going to be the 45th President of the United States of America. The polls are closed and finalized, but the discussion is far from finished.
