Milford’s family-owned and operated ice cream spot has been a summertime staple for countless families. The Sundae House, located on 499 New Haven Ave., is celebrating their sixtieth anniversary of sundae smiles.
In 1963, Angelina Simone–The Sundae House’s original owner– opened up a small fruit and vegetable stand on the land. After hearing the idea of a Carvel being put in its place, Simone was inspired to create an ice cream shop of her own.
Simone came to America from Campagna, Italy. Unlike many women at that time, Simone had a college education and wanted to put it to use, leading her to create The Sundae House.
After Simone’s passing, The Sundae House was handed down to her son Jim for over 50 years. Jim spent his time doing what he loved working twelve hour days, seven days a week at The Sundae House. Jim’s son took over the business in 2018 following his father’s passing and now runs it with the help of his children Alex and Nicolette and wife Sam.
Nicolette Simone, great granddaughter of Angelina Simone and daughter of current owner John Simone, has been working at The Sundae House for countless years.
Simone says, “I love when customers come and tell me interesting stories about my family. It’s nice to hear about my grandfather and great grandmother.”
The newest addition in honor of The Sundae House’s sixtieth year is merchandise designed by Simone. The merchandise has ‘The Sundae House’ written on the front with various favorites of The Sundae House printed on the back, such as the Rainbow Flavorburst Cone and the Banana Boat.
Another addition to The Sundae House this year is a new ice cream flavor called Campagna. Campagna, made in honor of Angelina Simone, is coffee ice cream, caramel swirl, brownie pieces, and chocolate-covered espresso beans.
As society has evolved over the years, so has The Sundae House. The business has grown their social media presence in recent years to have an Instagram and website for customers to visit with ease. Having a social media presence allows for them to communicate with people and see what they like and don’t like.
Senior Isabella Sanchez is a frequent customer at The Sundae House.
She says, “I love The Sundae House’s Instagram. It is just so fun and I love how they update you on what they have going on. It really gets me excited to go and check out what’s new!”
Be sure to stop by The Sundae House before they close for the season on October 1, 2023.
