Students have 34 clubs to choose from, they can specialize in certain subjects such as math and science. Or can represent hobbies, and interests such as fishing, and FBLA. Clubs are even offered where students can learn about cultures such as multicultural, and Japan.
Clubs are a valuable way that students can express their individual interests, and be around others that are enthusiastic about the same topics.
Science Olympiad
Science Olympiad, otherwise known as Sci-Lions, is a science-based club where students independently work on projects on subjects such as chemistry, biology, and engineering.
Sci-Lions meets Thursdays after school to check up on the progress of each project. Club Advisor Mr. John Connors’ job is to lay out the details and plan for future events.
Senior captain Karthikeya Lakoji states, “I enjoy the different varieties of challenges to take place in, and it’s fun to work together with friends.”
Science Olympiad participates in events throughout the year including the Yale invitational in February, and the UConn competition in March.
Visual Arts Club
Visual Arts Club meets every Monday at 2:10 in room 262 and is led by three-year club advisor Mrs.Victoria DePalma-Ames.
DePalma-Ames says, “Visual Arts Club offers a welcoming environment to participate in and offers different art endeavors.”
Visual Arts Club has a total of 25 members and around 12-15 show up for each meeting. A typical meeting consists of students having the opportunity to draw and express themselves through art.
Debate Club
Debate Club is a popular club within Foran that takes place every other Monday. It is run by history department leader Mr. Austin Cesare.
Debate Club has been available to students for many years. Every meeting, a topic is presented that students debate about with several other team members. Topics have a wide variety, and can relate to real world issues.
The students come up with their own topics to debate about. Some of the recent topics include, is animal testing ethical and, should Connecticut ban single-use plastic water bottles?
Future Business Leaders of America
Future Business Leaders of America, or FBLA, is a business based club that focuses on the applications of business to students’ lives.
In the past, club members have participated in stock trading competitions where they can win prizes and scholarships for placing in the top.
Run by business teacher Mrs. Melissa Cacioppo, FBLA offers insight to business topics that may not be available in an academic course and promotes entrepreneurship and business -related critical thinking skills.
Forever Friends
Forever Friends is a mentorship club offered at Foran that specializes in making lifelong connections with others, and throwing parties for special-ed students for each holiday. For example, there are parties for Halloween, Christmas, and Valentine’s Day. Students from both Law and Foran participate in these events.
Senior member Jeevansai Koduri states, “It’s really fun and I look forward to every meeting, we play games and have food.”
Some of the activities include bingo, scavenger hunts, and watching movies. Snacks range from cookies to candy.
