Blood, sweat and tears poured into one of the most competitive conferences in Connecticut. The Southern Connecticut Conference has been flourishing since 1994 and continues to grow with more talented athletes approaching the thirtieth anniversary of the SCC.
The SCC was founded February 3, 1994 with twenty member schools and affirmed their commitment to the new league to the original All Connecticut Conference leader Peter Young. This conference has continued to grow over the years and will continue to improve.
Many of Foran’s athletes meet the challenge that is the competitive nature of the SCC. Here are some of Foran’s very own athletes, with their remarkable SCC highlights.
Taking it back to 2018, Foran’s memorable alumni Ryan Luth completed his high school record in wrestling of over 220 victories and was a four time SCC champ. Luth was a three time All- American and a crucial part of Foran’s wrestling program.
Over the years athletic director, Mr. Anthony Vitelli has seen many athletes perform at peak performance.
He states, “Through the years we have had many highly accomplished student athletes. Those student athletes have excelled with the SCC, but also at the state level. They have inspired our current student athletes to work hard and dedicate themselves both in the classroom and in the respective sports.”
Vitelli plays a large part in preparing for these athletic contests and enjoys seeing the work he does to put the schedule together come to fruition.
Currently, many athletes in the Foran community have been honored with All SCC recognition as well as competing at SCC championship events. Playing at such a high level only encourages these athletes to work even harder.
Senior Kelly Aspras, an SCC throwing finalist as well as an All American Wrestler, is very dedicated to her sports and sees the result when facing challenging opponents.
She states “I am a very competitive person so it hypes me up to throw better with tough competition.”
Aspras has many goals for the future, and hopes to throw 40 feet, win state opens, and break some records. This does not come easy and Aspras will need to put in the work during the off season to achieve these goals.
Additionally, senior Ellen Pan has recently received the outstanding honor of being SCC swimmer of the year, along with teacher Mrs. Meghan Benson who received coach of the year.
She understands the importance of this achievement and explains her enthusiasm and shock towards it by stating “ It’s exciting, not expected but really happy that it happened.”
Pan has her final upcoming meet for state opens at Yale University and hopes to enjoy her final moments with the team.
She states,“My goal is to simply have fun and soak up my last high school meet.”
Not only has the Southern Connecticut Conference provided the Foran community with an ability to showcase their athletic abilities, but it has also provided recognition to students who put in the work to succeed on a daily basis.
