From a cool experience at Frozen the Musical to an exhilarating walk on the Boston Freedom Trail, the Foran United States History (U.S. History) and Journalism students gained a wide range of knowledge on their three-day field trip to Boston.
History teacher and chaperone Mrs. Cynthia Bradford says, “It was impactful in many ways, not only did they learn a lot of the history of the United States, they also got to experience the aquarium, a show, and even more.”
She also talks about how students not only learned facts, but they also learned many life skills. She explains, “Learning how to get along with others, managing time, budgeting, ect. It’s a good experience to leave Milford, you learn a lot about yourself when you leave your comfort zone.”
The diverse itinerary provided for an exciting experience for all attendees with three days filled with fun, learning, and lots of food.
Wednesday: Students started off the trip bright and early departing by bus at 7am. Before embarking on an official tour of the oldest Major League Baseball stadium in the country; Fenway Park, the group walked through the Fenway Gardens, which included both a Vietnam and World War I memorial.
They then made a trip to the New England Aquarium to learn about different animals such as seals, sea lions, fish, penguins, and a group favorite: Myrtle the Turtle.
A fan favorite was lunch at the Quincy Market, junior Katie Vitaletti states, “It was so much fun spending time with everyone in a social environment and being able to try cool foods and go into stores and shop.”
Thursday: On the second day, Journalism and U.S. History students separated. Journalism was dropped off at the Old State House, while U.S. History departed for Salem. Journalism students toured the State House, the Paul Revere House, and walked the Boston Freedom Trail.
U.S. History students toured Salem, starting off at the Salem Witch Museum, then participating in a Witchcraft and Ghost Experience show, continuing into a walking tour of the historical site.
They ended their day with a chance to see the box office hit Taylor Swift the Eras Tour movie.
Friday: On the final day, the Journalism Students got to attend the National High School Journalism Convention with over 4,000 other students from all over the country. The aspiring journalists were given the opportunity to have discussions with professionals, have their own publication critiqued, and attend different workshops.
Junior Carlie Simard said she enjoyed the workshops, “They gave lots of good ideas for our own school’s journalism program.”
United States History Student Allison Stefan states, “My favorite activity was the USS Constitution. It was really cool to see a ship used in the War of 1812.”
While the other students were at the convention, U.S. History students got to go to the Bunker Hill Monument, the USS Constitution ship, and the View of Boston. After a busy day the whole group returned to Milford with a plethora of new knowledge.
