Holiday songs get you in the holiday spirit after Thanksgiving. Songs are played in every mall and store across the country. People use them on their Instagram stories, but does it ever come to mind what the students of Foran prefer?
Many students were asked for their opinions via a Google Form. Senior Marco Ayala states, “My favorite Christmas song is Carol of the Bells. I like it because it is catchy and fun. I really like the bells in the song. I think they are a nice touch”
Carol Of The Bells is a fairly old Christmas themed song. The song was created in 1936, when Peter Willhousky wrote the lyrics for the song, over Mykola Leontovych’s orchestral part. The song is currently under copyright, owned by Carl Fischer Music, but has been covered by many artists. The song has been performed in nearly every major genre, according to Wikipedia.
Junior Zach Ilama says, “ I like the song All I Want for Christmas is You,” by Mariah Carey. “I really like the song and I like Mariah Carey’s other songs.”
All I Want For Christmas Is You is quite a bit younger than Carol of the Bells, released in 1994, under Carey’s fourth studio album, and her first holiday album. The song would be the lead single on the album, which was released under Columbia Records. The New Yorker describes it as, “One of the few worthy modern additions to the holiday canon,” according to RIAA.
Senior Karthikeya Lakoji says, “White Christmas would have to be my favorite. I like the catchy melody.”
According to the website American Songwriter, the song White Christmas was written in 1942, originally by Irving Berlin for Bing Crosby. Berlin wrote the song for the movie Holiday Inn, and tried to depict a picturesque winter wonderland, with a sleigh going through the snow. Crosby’s record was in the Billboard Top 100 for 11 weeks, and returned to the number one spot for the holiday season in 1943 and 1944.
While many students voted, four songs came through to be the most popular among the students. In third place, there is a tie between All I Want for Christmas is You, by Mariah Carey, and Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree, by Brenda Lee. In second place is Christmas Tree Farm, by Taylor Swift. In first place is Last Christmas, by Wham!
