The most popular music streaming platforms among students are Spotify and Apple Music. At the end of every year, these platforms come out with Spotify Wrapped and Apple Replay – a summary of the user’s listening habits through the year.
These summaries include the user’s top artists, songs, music genre, and total number of minutes listening to music with that platform. Spotify Wrapped and Apple Replay also allow listeners to reflect on their own time spent listening to music, and how it affects their everyday lives. A large number of Foran students filled out a survey answering a number of questions regarding their listening habits, as well as how it benefits their time at school.
Junior Teresa Lin explains, “Listening to music is beneficial to studying and learning in school because it can help you ignore the background noises of other people who are distracting. With listening to music, there is a high chance that you will not be able to hear those people and continue studying.”
Lin, as well as many other students, believe that listening to music while studying can be very beneficial to their ability to work productively.
An article from healthline.com states, “Research from 2019 suggests music can activate the same reward centers in your brain as other things you enjoy. Rewarding yourself with your favorite music can provide the motivation you need to learn new information.”
Having motivation to study is something that many students may struggle with as the school year progresses. Getting to rebuild that motivation with music, as shown by research, can have many academic benefits to a student’s productivity. However, music is good for more than just providing motivation, as explained by senior Carmelo Nunno.
Nunno states, “Yes. It serves as a healthy distraction because it distracts you from the other things going on around you so that you can focus on your work better.”
Many students share the opinion that listening to music allows them to be less distracted by other things. Having less of these distractions would prove to be a better studying environment, and very beneficial to students in and out of school.
Music can also have very positive benefits towards students’ stress levels. Since schoolwork can be a very stressful load, many students find themselves searching for different ways to lower their stress. This allows them to complete their work better and more efficiently.
An article from Grand Canyon University explains, “One study from the National Library of Medicine found that listening to music has a positive effect on the psychobiological stress system.”
With midterms just around the corner, it’s important that students find ways to study effectively so that they can do their best on their exams. By listening to music, many students can find less distraction, more motivation, and lowered stress levels in order to better complete their work.
