Books are an important source of information and inspiration and libraries are helping people with getting knowledge. However, not all books are returned back. It’s important to remember that these actions have consequences.
There are a lot of possibilities of what could happen if the book borrower or patron didn’t return for a longer time. Every library reacts differently depending on their policy with overdue books.
Administrator of the Milford Public Library Christine Angeli states, “If you took a book out, and didn’t return it for months and months, our system automatically marks that book on a work record as being lost.”
The fact that some libraries can make notes in patron’s credit reports is well known. Stories about loan refusal from not returning a book on time have been heard by many of us. It’s true, however not all libraries do that.
Angeli continues, “We used to have a collection agency. A few years ago we did stop doing that and there are a number of libraries that still do. They hire a collection agency to make calls or send letters to a patron, try to recoup the item or the money for the cost of the items. It also used to be the case that would go on your credit report…we no longer do that.”
The Milford Public Library welcomes people to stop by and check out a book and is a great quiet place to study. They also have movies and CDs available for borrowing.
Junior Dabi Lee advises, “The library is a great resource I think many people forget about, especially those who like to read. It’s perfect to avoid spending money on new books as long as you bring back the books you checked out in the same condition you found them.”
As an administrator of the Public Library, Angeli pays attention to people and treats patrons with understanding.
She says, “We don’t really proactively go after people at all. It’s when they come back to use the library, and their account is still there and it’s showing they have non-returned material. … Parents might get busy, might forget, have the books at home for a long long time and then they suddenly come in after these books have become “lost” and they return 40 books. That happens.”
The Milford Public Library is a good place for those, who are interested in reading. There’s also different programs you can check out on their website: https://www.ci.milford.ct.us/milford-public-library.
