As the year goes on, students’ senioritis gets stronger. Senioritis is a diagnosis for high schoolers when they reach senior year and start to give up. With the half year point just passing, seniors are looking forward to graduation and get caught up in the fact that they still have work to complete and school to attend.
Some symptoms include being late to school a numerous amount of times, feeling unmotivated with school work, and ultimately falling behind. Some other symptoms can include, procrastination, feeling burnt out, dropping grades, low effort, and losing interest in school in general.
One senior that has fallen victim to the hard hitting epidemic is Isabella Sanchez.
Sanchez states, “My major symptoms are being extremely late and missing my first period classes, I have too many tardies and absences to keep up with during semester one, I don’t even want to disclose it to the public.”
On the other hand, senior Michael Piscitelli talks about his experience by saying “I mainly just don’t feel like doing my work or getting things completed because it just doesn’t feel like it matters anymore”
Another cause for major senioritis is those who have already committed to a college, or made a future career plan. This causes students to fall behind because they have already achieved their goals for the future. Being accepted to college has become a major factor in the decrease of engagement in school.
Sanchez is being impacted by this phenomenon and shares “It’s hit me super hard after hearing back from my top colleges, I’ve felt the need to give up more and it’s harder to stay focused on school work”
Although many think that senoritis is a bad thing and comes with only negative effects, some believe that being able to chill out and not worry about work for their last semester is deserved.
For example, senior Cameron Lefebvre states “I still stay up to date with all my work and feel mostly motivated, but recently it has been feeling like I should get to relax seeing where I’ve worked so hard for the past 4 years, it almost feels like I deserve a break.”
Fighting the urge to fall into senioritis is quite difficult, but necessary to keep up your grades and prepare you for college. Some tips that may help you stay on task are to set goals for yourself, be organized, join a study group or study with friends, use resources at the school, and ask for help.
Resources at Foran that can be utilized are the zen den, reaching out to your counselors or any adult in the school, taking a break at the TLC, and extra help with teachers is always beneficial.
Mr. Justin Zywocinski shares some tips he has to keep seniors on task: “My best advice to help combat senioritis is to help find what motivates you every day and use that motivation to help make senior year a productive and fun one!”
In conclusion, fighting the urge of falling behind is extremely difficult but also super important in order to stay prepared for college.
