Blowing up overnight, TikTok Shop is a store within the TikTok app that allows users to purchase trending items with the click of a button. The easy purchasing process is almost seamless, and has many hooked on its convenience. However, is it too good to be true?
TikTok Shop is a company on the rise with a unique aspect of many different sellers, including name brands like Rare Beauty, Gatorade, and more that create a high end aspect to the site. The unique thing about TikTok Shop is the daily deals that constantly flood the page.
Junior Caroline Janik states, “I got the Beachwaver for over 50% off. I have deals on everything in the shop because of my account.”
Many items can be found in the shop, from beauty to electronics and even food. According to a recently conducted survey at Foran High School, with 29 students, some have bought things such as earrings, clothes and makeup off the app. Other trendy items have been purchased like the viral Chamoy Pickle Kit.
The items on TikTok Shop range from less than 50 cents to thousands of dollars, this diversity certainly has many consumers question the shop’s credibility. While some cite positive experiences using the app, many students shared several negative thoughts on the shop.
Junior Hailee Rabbitt states, “It seems very sketchy and promotions are always coming up like they are urging you to buy. I wouldn’t think to buy things from a social media site.”
With mixed reviews in this recent survey, 31.8% of students claim that they are scared to buy off the site and 58.6 % are questioning the company’s reliability. These numbers clearly reflect the uncertainty of the majority of consumers.
Senior Gianni Troia shares his negative experience when purchasing an Rc car on the app and states, “I got scammed, it sent me a toy car with no remote control.”
Based on student testimony, a consensus should be to proceed with caution while purchasing; however there are many exceptional deals that many have taken advantage of.
