Whether cheering for the Foran or Law soccer teams, the Milford community came together at Foran’s Vito Devito Sports Complex in order to support Avery’s Little Army.
The Avery’s Little Army Foundation was created to honor the legacy of 12 year old Avery Lafferty. Lafferty passed away this past July after battling an aggressive form of brain cancer for over two and a half years.
The mission of Avery’s Little Army is to advance pediatric brain and other cancer research through funding, providing support and assistance to families battling pediatric cancer, and promoting activities to raise awareness.
Lafferty spent her time on the field playing competitive soccer primarily as a center midfielder therefore the game holds a special place in the hearts of friends and family.
Both at school and during the games, students, staff, and the community were asked to ‘Go Gold’ by wearing gold, yellow, or Avery’s Little Army apparel.
Lisa Lafferty, mother to Avery says, “Walking in and seeing the Avery’s Little Army shirts and everyone supporting brought tears to my eyes to be perfectly honest. Avery was obsessed with soccer. She was a really good player so the fact that we are doing this to honor her legacy means a lot to me”.
At the entrance of the field money was collected with proceeds going directly to Avery’s Little Army. In total between Harborside Middle School, Foran High School, and Law High School, over $2,100 was raised.
Captain of the boys soccer team, Luke Hackett states, “It’s amazing to be a part of a movement like this and come together to show the whole town’s support for the Lafferty family. It’s an honor to be a part of something bigger than the team”.
This year Alexis Lafferty, older sister to Avery Lafferty began her freshman year at Foran. She is on the girls varsity soccer team where she plays various positions including center back.
Being a part of the game honoring Avery, Alexis Lafferty says, “This all puts a smile on my face and makes me so happy. Avery loved the game of soccer and I know she would have wanted to be honored this way. Sadly we lost the game but with my sister by my side it does not matter. I think this was a great way to honor her”.
The Avery’s Little Army Foundation is always looking for volunteers. Joining is a great way to be involved within the community and share Avery’s story. Be on the lookout for upcoming events to bring awareness to Avery’s battle and pediatric cancer in the community.
