Back in early September, the community of Milford welcomed not only autumn but Locke’s Caribbean Kitchen; a small Jamaican restaurant that made its debut downtown. After only a month of business, only positive comments have come from customers simply raving about the food and its pair of owners, Sushane and Omar Locke.
As the couple shares, they hope their restaurant gives customers “a taste of their home.”
The pair has excitedly noted how the town of Milford seems to be a very supportive community in itself. They are constantly getting orders from local establishments such as the city’s fire department.
They’ve noted the enthusiasm of Milford citizens at the chance of getting to try authentic Jamaican food. It seems as though the community was simply eager to delve into a new culture that the Milford downtown restaurants had never seen before.
When it comes to describing the community of Milford, O. Locke goes on to describe the city as a place where “everyone looks out for each other.”
He relays the attitude they have received since opening to that of the Jamaican culture itself. When describing Jamaican customs, the biggest concepts that come to mind are that of family and caring for one another.
The pair had both been brought up by caring and supportive families, and they hope to bring that same attitude not only to their two sons but to their customers as well.
S. Locke expresses wanting customers to not only feel satisfied with their meal but also their customer service. Adding onto this, O. Locke mentions that one of his main hopes for the restaurant is to create a safe place for customers in where they feel welcome.
To further express this goal, O. Locke goes on how he works alongside his wife in order to ensure they build a relationship with each individual customer.
This intent relates to the culture in itself, where a community is expected to look out for each other and provide a safe space. O. Locke expresses how despite Locke’s Caribbean Kitchen not being a big franchise, the couple prepares their food with love.
The pair states not only want the restaurant to become more well known throughout the city of Milford so its locals have the chance to taste Caribbean food but also to experience the Caribbean culture that is full of compassion and kindness.
S. Locke herself says, “Everyone deserves to be surrounded by love.”
