National Law Enforcement Appreciation Day, annually celebrated on January 9, is the perfect way to show gratitude to those who defend citizens. Law enforcement works tirelessly to ensure safety, stability, and justice are maintained to preserve security and trust within the community.
Law enforcement takes various forms to maintain safety, whether on the street or in school, but its roles are equally indispensable. As the school resource officer (SRO) of Joseph A. Foran High School, Micaela Kreitman balances creating a safe atmosphere for students by providing a supportive academic environment.
Kreitman states, “They range from answering questions from administration or students to providing a visible presence, remaining approachable, building relationships with administration/students, and making an effort to create a safer environment.”
By forming these relationships with students, SROs prevent school-related crimes by confronting the problem before escalating. In turn, students are promoted to personal growth and the opportunity for academic success, protecting their future.
The presence of an SRO benefits students and faculty by fostering safety for individuals. Freshman Jon Boguniecki states, “I think that if we did not have an SRO, many students would struggle at school.”
If schools lack an SRO, students and faculty will have fewer support systems. This will severely affect the functionality of the school community and the safety and well-being of individuals throughout the nation.
Law enforcement contains various careers that cover and prevent issues nationwide. With many problems sprouting in densely populated cities, law enforcement must take proper steps to ensure safety in their communities.
Detective Michael Novellino at the New York Police Department states, “While working in the city there is a lot to worry about, but my priority is to solve cases that can impact groups of people.”
The jobs that law enforcement contributes to extend beyond working at computers. Detectives gather evidence, interview suspects or witnesses, and follow information surrounding a crime. Their work is meticulous and detailed using critical thinking, observation, and determination to reach a consensus.
Law Enforcement Appreciation Day serves as a reminder of the extensive lengths displayed by those who protect society. It is a day to acknowledge and support those who sacrifice so much for communities. Not only does this day honor law enforcement, but it also serves as a connector between the bonds of citizens and the upholders of justice.
