As a child, snow days were one of the most exciting things to wake up to. People used to manifest them by putting spoons under their pillows or flushing ice down the toilet. However, as years went on, snow days seemed to mellow down and not be as exciting as they used to be.
Not only have people’s mindsets changed, but they also haven’t been happening as often as when we were kids. Currently, in 2024-2025, Milford County has only seen delays and no snow days, no matter how much snow is on the ground.
It was only 12 years ago that we had a snowstorm with 30 inches of snow. Now it is rare that there is a storm with six inches of snow.
Meteorology teacher Mrs. Laura Donovan says, “There is no denying that there has been a warming climate the past ten years.”
This is mostly due to our activities and how we power our home and environment. Donovan says we have been coming to terms with this for the last 20 years but have yet to make a difference.
A little bit students can do to make a difference is walking. If it’s a short drive somewhere it can make a fun walk and help the environment.
Now during snow days, instead of going out in the snow to sled and make snowmen with friends, high schoolers stay inside and catch up on what we would’ve been doing in school that day, or watch our favorite show. When we get older we forget how much fun snow was when we were kids, and just take time for ourselves.
“Once when I was a kid I made an igloo in my front yard,” says freshman Emily Speringo. Now during her day off it looks very different, “I sleep in, shovel the driveway, and throw snowballs at my sister”
Although high schoolers no longer sled they can still walk and go out with friends. Junior Jillian Bianco, likes to admire the scenery, “I love seeing all the snow on the trees” she states.
It’s not just students who have the day off, teachers are also fortunate enough to have the day off. Their days are a little different. Donovan has two kids, so her day off is full of activities.
“There is a lot of time outside, my son likes sledding and snow angels,” she states.
When the teachers were young, they used to find out the night before if they had the day off. They would go out that night knowing they did not have to get up early the next day.
Many teachers spend the day with their families and take the deserved time off from their school work such as grading and planning lessons.
