According to Forbes, the video game industry has grown to be one of, if not the largest, entertainment industry, along with music and movies.
Entertainment is a way to amuse anyone and help someone escape reality’s troubles. Throughout the year, people are provided with new forms of entertainment, like new movies, albums, seasons of sports, and video games.
With the beginning of a new year like 2025, that means there is going to be a lot of new content and changes for the gaming industry, and some come with bigger expectations compared to others.
The Games Themselves
This year is expected to be big in terms of what games come out. The biggest title expected to come out is Grand Theft Auto 6 (GTA6), a game that has been anticipated for over a decade and a sequel to one of the most-sold games ever (GTA5).
Some other big titles that are expected to come out are Ghost of Yotei, Monster Hunter Wilds, Metroid Prime 4: Beyond, Borderlands 4, Pokemon Legends Z-A, Split Fiction, and Elden Ring: Nightreign, just to name a few.
“The game I am most interested to see come out in 2025 is Ghost of Yotei, the sequel to the 2020 title, Ghost of Tsushima,” says junior Jackson Storey. “I’m intrigued on where they go with the story following the conclusion of the first game.”

Companies, Consoles, and Competition
It is natural to see a lot of competition between companies that make games in the industry. Whether it is between bigger companies (Ex: Microsoft, Sony, Nintendo) making big projects (also known as AAA games), or between smaller studios that work independently to create their own small sized games (also known as indie games).
“I think the gaming genre will continue to try and make their games look more realistic, but indie games with unique art styles will come to beat them.” says senior Alexander Gregory. Gregory believes that indie games tend to have more passion behind them compared to big AAA titles, and will come to dominate them.
Big changes are expected to come from big developers though. Recently, Nintendo has revealed a first-look teaser of their new console, the Nintendo Switch 2, with more info to come at a later date.
“I think the new Mario Kart teased will be very popular as we have not gotten a brand new one since the Wii U,” says Gregory after reacting to the teaser.
There is a lot to expect from the gaming industry this year but only time will tell if this will be a successful or mediocre year for the industry.
