Golden Retrievers are heroes and being the courageous dogs they are, they can work in search and rescue missions, lending a paw to help save many lives. For example, in the tragic events regarding 9/11, two Golden Retrievers named Rylie and Bretagne searched for survivors trapped in the rubble of the World Trade Center.
A poll was conducted at Foran High School asking how many people have a golden retriever (answer)
Golden Retrievers are great with children and other family pets. A day to celebrate these four-legged friends is February 3, National Golden Retriever Day.
Golden retrievers were bred for the first time in 1854 as hunting dogs. Now, they serve to help
the blind, therapy dogs, search and rescue, and so much more.
National Golden Retriever Day was founded in 2012 by a veterinarian named Kristen Shroyer, who created this day of recognition in memory of her Golden Retriever who sadly passed away at age seven due to cancer.
Shroyer wants to honor the Golden Retriever’s qualities, including assisting and being a great therapy dog. These friendly pets are trustworthy, outgoing, very playful, and make perfect friends with their owners.
The Milford Animal Shelter says, “The pros of getting a dog are that dogs are very loyal, friendly, and overall make us happier.”
The shelter does its best to improve the lives of all the animals in their residence. The Milford Animal Shelter office hours are from 9 am – 5 pm from Monday – Friday and Saturday 9 am- 3 pm. Sunday they are closed.
However, Golden Retrievers aren’t the only dogs that make ideal pets. There are other breeds of dogs that can make a great addition to a family.
For example, The Milford Animal Shelter says one positive experience someone has had of adopting a dog from them is “…the dog was very nice and friendly and put a smile on their faces even if they had a rough day they know something cheerful is waiting for them at the door”.
Freshman Anna Piskura has a Golden Retriever mix and he is a rescue she describes him as “… very sweet and energetic and fun to have as a dog”
Overall golden retrievers are great dogs and bring joy to many homes, helping to protect families and becoming a wonderful friend along the way.
