Street Fighter 6, Splatoon 3, League of Legends, Super Smash Brothers: Ultimate, and NBA 2k25, and much more. Foran’s esports team competes in these games against various other schools within the state of Connecticut in hopes of returning to school the next day victorious.
The team had been started under the supervision of tech-ed teacher Mr. Chris Dubuque when he first joined the school’s community back in the 2021-2022 school year. He states the idea of an esports team within the district came from the district’s superintendent, Dr. Cutaia, who had been looking for an enthusiastic teacher willing to coach the team.
It became clear through Dubuque’s love for video games and previous coaching experience in sports such as soccer and track that he was more than qualified to take up the job.
He expresses just how essential an esports team is to many students by acknowledging not all kids are athletic and yet hold a desire to represent their school. He explains that esports gives kids this opportunity.
Dubuque states, “You don’t have to be a football star in order to represent Foran.”
At the beginning of the school year, Dubuque would send out an email to students announcing that the team is officially considered a CIAC sport that competes in the games Rocket League, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, and Super Smash Brothers: Ultimate.
He also mentions how the Milford district is currently a topic discussing the organization of an arena that Foran and Law can partake in for both scrimmages and actual competitions.
In regards to the fall season, former senior captain of the team Lukas Wikstrom states, “The fall season went great for the team: there were a few bumps in the road, but we did our very best.”
As the winter season comes to a close and the team begins to come back together for the spring season, Dubuque emails students in search of new members to form competitive groups for the following games: Chess, Madden NFL, NBA2k, League of Legends, Rocket League, and Hearthstone.
Even through the lack of members, the team remains hopeful of their upcoming season. Junior player Aralynne Woods states, “In the spring season, I hope that the team improves and makes the playoffs.”
With the support from the team’s former captain along with that of the district themselves, the school’s small esports team comes into the spring season determined to win like never before.
