Being a Natural Helper at Foran High School requires a strong commitment and a sense of responsibility. The role centers around offering support and assistance to others. Natural Helpers create safe spaces for students to seek guidance and express their feelings.
If a student needs help finding their way to classes, has questions about the school, or anything else, they can just ask a Natural Helper.
The Natural Helper Club, which consists of juniors and seniors, is a selective group. Potential members have to go through interviews and answer a series of questions to make sure they are a good fit to help around the school.
“Some roles we have to take on are stepping up and helping out the freshman during things like advisory,” Junior Isabella Warakomski shares.
Being put in rooms with freshmen during advisory for the entire school year helps in many ways. It gives students a sense of comfort knowing that if they have any questions about work or school, they have someone to go to.
The Natural Helpers organization is run by Mrs. Lisa Farrell and Mrs. Melissa Kaminski. When someone is accepted into this program, they are required to go through a series of training sessions to make sure they have the necessary skills to effectively help the freshmen. Natural Helpers serve as an outlet where students feel comfortable asking questions.
The students who are chosen to be Natural Helpers are trained to support their peers with emotional, social, and personal challenges. They are chosen because people can go to them for help without being scared.
“Advice I would give to people wanting to become a Natural Helper is you should get involved with the incoming freshmen and don’t be afraid to help anyone who needs it,” states Junior Brooklyn Nittoly.
Getting involved with the Natural Helpers has many benefits, like developing communication skills, helping support peers, and contributing to a positive school environment. To apply to be a Natural Helper, there is a form to complete, and after doing so, there is an interview with Farrell or Kaminski.
Being a Natural helper in Foran is more than just a role; it is a commitment to building a stronger school community.
