From scoring goals to shooting hoops, 5,865 high school students across Connecticut participate in Unified Sports programs, partaking in a variety of athletic activities.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), physical activity is advantageous. Benefits include improved sleep, enhanced muscle and bone strength, increased cognitive clarity, improved cardiovascular health, and various other mental and physical advantages.
Beyond these physical health benefits, participating in Unified Sports offers more than meets the eye, positively impacting the lives of its members.
“Not only is it exercise, but it is also a sense of community,” states Mr. James Chiappetta, Unified Sports Advisor and Track and Field coach.
This sense of community extends beyond Foran, as numerous Connecticut schools have Unified Sports programs and participate in local tournaments. Despite the competition, Unified Sports exemplifies teamwork, camaraderie, and sportsmanship.
“We have our Unified Sports prom at the end of the school year, and we invite unified teams from other towns,” says Chiappetta.
Unified Sports at Foran High School welcomes students of all abilities, encouraging everyone to participate in the diverse range of activities offered. These activities include soccer, basketball, track, volleyball, softball, and even cornhole.

“We really want to give our athletes a well-rounded experience,” explains Chiappetta. The program isn’t just about competition; it’s about inclusion and friendship. “We want to promote friendship, community, and a sense of belonging,” Chiappetta adds.
Students also look forward to activities outside of sports that build teamwork, such as going to Dave and Busters. These activities provide them with an opportunity to have fun while strengthening their bond with teammates and creating lasting memories.
For senior Maria Da Silva, the sense of unity within the program is what shines through the most.
“We have all been working together to become unified,” says Da Silva. “Most importantly, we’re having fun.”
The inclusive and competitive atmosphere fosters student growth and development, allowing improvements in all aspects of life.
Sophomore Gabriel Rainish recognizes that the Unified Sports environment is one of complete acceptance. “My favorite thing about it is that everyone is welcome,” he says.
Unified Sports’ caliber of inclusion is remarkable, as the various needs and desires of each student are met. Whether an opposing team assists a Lion, or vice versa, each competitor has the other’s best interests in mind.
Junior Aidan Harrison, a returning member of Unified Sports, relishes the time he spends with the program.
“I promise; it’s going to be fun!” he exclaims.
Harrison enjoys the bus rides, atmosphere, and growth surrounding Unified Sports. All aspects that foster the welcoming yet enriching program.
While many athletic programs and their spectators prioritize the team’s success at the expense of the opponent, Unified Sports uplifts participants on all teams, giving students of all abilities the chance to succeed. The blend of enjoyment, physical activity, and life skills comes full circle, with members becoming greater athletes and people.
