According to USAFacts.org, there are approximately 15.8 million veterans across the United States, with about 7,000 in the Milford area, representing about 14% of the city’s population.
These men and women have served in various branches of the military, spanning generations and conflicts, and they continue to make a lasting impact on the communities they call home.
Veterans play a vital role in the nation’s history and continue to make up a significant portion of our communities. Their contributions extend beyond the uniform—they are educators, first responders, mentors, and community leaders. Annually, Veterans’ Day is recognized on November 11 to honor their service, sacrifices, and dedication.
Locally, Milford marks Veterans Day with a parade through the downtown area, a tradition that draws students, families, veterans, and residents together in a show of gratitude and community pride. Schools across the district also take part in honoring veterans through assemblies, classroom visits, and educational activities, giving students the opportunity to learn about the realities of military service firsthand.
Veterans Day was originally established in 1919 by former President Woodrow Wilson, following the end of World War I (WWI). It was first known as Armistice Day, commemorating the armistice signed on November 11, 1918, that ended hostilities in WWI. In 1954, following the efforts of veterans’ organizations and recognition of those who served in conflict, the holiday was renamed Veterans Day, expanding its purpose to honor all American veterans, not just those who served in World War I. One of those honored locally is Master Sergeant Michael DeGrego, who served in the New York Air National Guard from 1971 to 1992. Today, DeGrego is a familiar and beloved face in the Milford Public School system, working as a substitute teacher at Foran, Law, Harborside, West Shore, and East Shore.
His favorite part of Veterans Day is coming to school. He enjoys discussing the unexpected aspects of his time serving with students.
Degrego also marches every year in the downtown parade.
“When I go to Milford and I turn that corner by Milford Photo, and my students from Foran, Law, East Shore, West Shore, and Harborside see me, they start screaming, ‘Mr. DeGrego, Mr. DeGrego!’ That’s the greatest feeling in the world.”
An alderman liaison for the Veterans, Ceremony & Parade Commissions, Paul Healy, adds, “We all look to honor all persons who have answered the call to serve our nation. We owe them a debt of gratitude and a place of honor in our hearts for their personal sacrifice.”
The Milford Veterans’ Day Parade will be held on Sunday, November 9, 2025, starting at the Daniel Wasson Field and ending on the Milford Green, where the High School Bands will play. On November 11, 2025, there will be the Annual Wreath Laying Ceremony in front of City Hall.
