Each year, thousands of riders, survivors, and supporters gather in New Haven, Connecticut, for the Closer to Free Bike Ride to raise funds for Smilow Cancer Hospital as well as for the Yale Cancer Center.
According to Closertofree.org, since its debut in 2011, all accumulated participants have generated over $33 million for the life-changing work of these medical centers, truly making a difference.
In advance, riders can choose from multiple in-person routes ranging from 10 to 100 miles, which begin and end at the Yale Bowl located in New Haven.
Sarah Tullo, an Advanced Practice Registered Surgeon at Yale New Haven Hospital, says, “I ride for those who can’t. As many who ride, I have seen friends struggle with cancer, which pushes me to participate in the cause, making it much more than a race.”
The ride routes traverse scenic landscapes throughout the region, offering participants a highly unique experience that combines challenge with celebration and honor.
Cancer survivor, Fairfield teacher, and active Closer to Free cyclist, Jacquelyn Pierro states, “Crossing the finish line is always special, but the ‘Smilow Salute’ is the moment that gets me every time. Riding past the hospital, honoring the patients still in the fight, thanking the nurses, doctors, aides, and volunteers—it fills me with gratitude. I am so thankful to have walked out as a survivor, and I carry hope for those who are still battling.”
In addition to the inspiring bike ride, the event features beautiful survivor stories, family-friendly activities, food trucks, and even live music from Connecticut’s very own “Rumrunners.” These factors directly contribute to creating a day full of community spirit and encouragement.
As an active participant in the Closer to Free Bike Rides, teacher Sam Grenus states, “This year, I rode in honor of my Grandpa, Aunt, high school friend, as well as a family friend battling terminal cancer, and those I know who are in remission. Being able to cross that finish line and feel the camaraderie of those cheering me on who had no idea who I was is what it’s all about.”
The overall ride has an everlasting impact on those suffering and battling cancer across the world by bringing people together in so many amazing ways.
Whether you’re an experienced cyclist, cancer survivor, or someone who simply wishes to make a positive impact, The Closer to Free Bike Ride offers all to join and participate in such a meaningful cause.
Remote Rider registration remained open until September 30, 2025. However, donations are always welcome year-round to medical centers for cancer research and can be made through https://www.rideclosertofree.org/home.
