As winter approaches and the weather gets colder Foran Ski and Snowboard Club gears up and gets ready to hit the mountain. Each winter, meetings are held in Mr. Tod Williams room 201 to welcome new students and discuss what the future of the club looks like for this winter.
Get Ready to Hit the Slopes
Starting in 2000-01 with the help of James Malaney (class of 2004) and Williams, ski club traveled to its first mountain: Mohawk Mountain in Cornwall Connecticut. This was the start of a new community here at Foran.
“Each trip has unique things happen on each of them. The 4 day Canada trip was a blast as we stayed in historic Quebec City. We skied 3 different mountains days after a blizzard rolled through. When we went to Le Masif (mountain that the Canadian Super G team trains at) we got hit with over a foot and a half of snow. That was the most amazing conditions. Others include going to the Olympic Museum, seeing the Old Man on the Mountain in NH before it crumbled the next year, night tubing, VT Country Store visits, Brattle Burger visits, & of course the Pump House indoor water park,” says Williams.
Each year ski club members are presented with the options to go to day trips or a overnight trip or both. In past years ski club has gone to places like Vermont, New Hampshire, New York and many other places.
This year Williams and the club are going on a total of three trips, two day trips and one overnight trip. On Saturday, February 2nd they are traveling to Mount Snow in Dover Vermont for the day and on Friday, February 22nd they are traveling to Catamount in Hillsdale New York.
Each year students are also able to go on a overnight trip that spans over a weekend in the winter. This year they are traveling to Burlington Vermont the weekend of March 8th-10th. Along with hitting the mountains at Jay Peak and Smugglers’ Notch that weekend, students are also stopping at the indoor water park called Pump House to spend some time off the mountain.
Every trip is a fun filled time for students to bond with each other and the teachers because of the shared love for skiing and snowboarding. “I love spending time with my friends while doing something we all love!” says senior Claire Koppy. “Seeing the relationships students build with one another and the new friendships that emerge over the years. Sometimes the students have nothing in common off the mountain, but on these trips we all find common ground while having a lot of fun. I also love giving students new experiences with the different places we go.” says Williams.
The club welcomes everyone and is accommodating to all levels of expertise. “Anyone can join whether you ski/snowboard or not. We can set up people who want to try it with discounted lessons at the mountains. Students go and by the end of the trip they are getting down the mountain… by the end of the ski season they are keeping up with friends.” says Williams.
