Senior Softball Players Look to Capitalize in Their Final Season

Batter up! The Foran Softball team is approaching a meaningful accomplishment for their program: reaching the state tournament for the first time since 2017. They compete today against Bristol Central in the first round of states. Foran is currently seeded #18 and Bristol Central is #15. The game starts at 2:30pm.
The program has endured a complete turnaround over a span of two years. Last season, their record came out to 3-17. However, with the lead of seniors Makenna Prete, Kailey Lowenburg, and Hailey LaForte, along with new head coach Julie Johnson, the Lady Lions ended this season with a 11-9 record, clinching a birth in the state playoffs. To the trio of seniors, it means a lot to them.
“It means a lot to me and the rest of the seniors to make the playoffs because last year we missed the mark by so much,” said senior captain Kailey Lowenburg. “We’ve worked really hard so seeing the hard work pay off is amazing.”
The coaching staff is proud of their efforts in doing that. “I am so proud of how resilient this team is. They had a tough season last year. They came back this year, worked hard and encouraged each other. They strive to get better every day and to always give 100%, ” said head coach Julie Johnson.
The entente of seniors played a big role by exemplifying the right way to play and being role models for the other players. “The seniors are good leaders, and they work hard which results in others following,” said Assistant Softball coach Gina Georgetti.
“They all are leaders on this team. They lead their teammates on and off the field and are great role models,” said Johnson. With all of this work put in, goals were set for them to meet, and an excitement for the game arose as a result.
“I wanted to make sure we were going into the season focused and ready to win. The girls were all excited about the season so it was easy to keep our energy up and our love of the game in mind,” said senior captain Makenna Prete.
With the team dynamic intact, it contributes to having a genuine love for Foran softball. When asked what her favorite part about the game is, Prete said: “I would say seeing my good friends everyday and working together to accomplish our goal of winning. I have developed a passion for softball because I have teammates who encourage me and want me to succeed.”
Georgetti agreed by saying: “Their camaraderie is what contributes to their success.”
Playing Foran softball also teaches an important message to players. Georgetti says that message is: “Hard work pays off when you put in the time and effort, and as a result it benefits your performance.”
The team looks to take these important tools to the state tournament and use them to their advantage. Coach Johnson added: “I am so excited for the team! Foran softball has a rich tradition of success in the state tournament. After a 1 year reprieve, we are excited to get back there. We are ready to peak during the states and make a run for the title!”
