Jonathan Kirk, otherwise known as Dababy, is a 28-year-old rapper from Charlotte, North Carolina. He just released his second studio album ‘KIRK’, which comes eight months after his debut studio album ‘Baby on Baby’ was released.
‘KIRK’ the album has 13 songs including a single named ‘INTRO’ which was released on September 19, 2019. ‘INTRO’ has a completely different style compared to most of Dababy’s hit songs.
Aidan Deschaine a junior says, “‘INTRO’ stands out to me because it is more personal than all the other songs.” To start the song Dababy explains how fast he became popular and all the great emotions that came with it, but this was short-lived because his father a true inspiration to him passed away around the same time. He continues this serious style throughout the song by showing his appreciation for the rest of his family, especially his daughter who gets more than one shoutout on the album. Dababy also references many different people throughout the song; Martin and Gina from the hit show Martin, star tennis players Venus and Serena Williams, and a reference to ‘Boyz n the Hood’ an iconic movie. All of these references help show the purpose of this song which is to show the importance of family.
To continue, the album has features from Kevin Gates, Chance the Rapper, Nicki Minaj, Lil Baby, Moneybagg Yo, Stunna 4 Vegas, and all 3 of the Migos. While having many features from popular artists Dababy is never outshined and makes his presence known throughout the entire project. ‘KIRK’ shows that DaBaby is more versatile than people believe him to be with a switch-up in his usual style and delivery with this being especially apparent in songs like “INTRO”. Junior Wesley Buzelle states, “My favorite song on the album is ‘VIBEZ’ because of the beat and the flow, to me, it just really stands out compared to the other songs.”
From song to song “Kirk” is consistent and entertaining proving it to be one of the best rap albums to be released all year.
