Pre-Game Coin Flip: Football captains Jack Cushman, Matthew Miller, Joe Gaetano, and James Cobain line up facing Weston high school captains. September 9, 2022.

As the 2022 fall sports season kicks off, the new captains are eager to lead their team to success. There are eight fall sports teams, including a varsity and junior varsity roster in addition to football which fields a freshman team that competes. This year’s fall captains want to represent and serve as leaders, to both their varsity and junior varsity teams.

Foran football has a total of four varsity captains; Jack Cushman, Matthew Miller, Joe Gaetano, and James Cobain.

Senior Joe Gaetano takes pride in his new co-captain title as he explains, “It feels good to lead the guys. I’ve always looked up to the captains from past years, and I hope I can be that person for the underclassmen.”

Girls cross country has two varsity captains; Grace Foley and Anna Harris. Accompanying them is boys cross country, where Kevin Chen and Tighe Duggan serve as varsity captains as well.

Many of these cross-country athletes have dedicated a majority of their time outside of school to their sport. After earning her title as captain, senior co-captain Grace Foley says, “I was very excited that the work I have put into my sport for the past few years paid off, and I was happy that my teammates trust me enough to be their captain.”

Boys varsity soccer has four captains; Liam Young, Jack D’Avignon, Nico Agresti, and Cristian Boutote. Colleen Ardolino and Zoe Fallon are co-captains for the girls varsity soccer team.

Being a captain comes with responsibility and passion for the sport, and a drive to improve team success. Senior co-captain Liam Young, says, “We lead by example and do everything we can do to improve not just our game, but those around us.”

Girls volleyball has two senior captains; Chloe Nittoly and Kaitlyn Beaupre.

Leading a team can be considered a challenge to some people, however working together as co-captains, such as Nittoly and Beaupre, can make a team’s bond even stronger. Co-Captain Kaitlyn Beaupre, says “I act as a role model to the rest of the team. I encourage my teammates on the court and I continue to support them off of the court to help them be the best player they can be. It’s my job to notice when the dynamic is off and work to get the team as one again.”

The cheerleading team has three varsity captains leading their squad; Mallory Janik, Jonna Lord, and Luci Cappello.

Cheerleading is one of many sports that requires leaders to help not only the younger athletes, but the whole team overall. Senior Mallory Janik says, “I am very proud to be one of the captains on the cheer team. My co-captains and I come together before games to go through what we’ll be doing at each game, and then explain it with the rest of the team.”

Lastly, swim and dive has three captains; Kaitlin Dobkowski, Kaleigh Morton, and Carolina Burcio.

Looking to be a positive role model for her teammates, senior Kaitlin Dobkowski says, “As a captain, I want to set the example of having team spirit and making sure everyone feels like they are a part of the team. I make sure to always try my hardest in everything I do inside and outside of the pool, that way other people will be motivated to do the same.”
