Fall is now in full swing, and as the season approaches the end families and friends all around are getting ready for Thanksgiving. The holiday season means giving thanks, good food, and quality time with family. Many have their own traditions for the holiday to make the day a little more special.
Traditions can be old and new, some are passed down over generations, but new traditions can be just as special. Students and faculty have their own holiday customs, which include giving back to the community.
At the school, many people participate in the Thanksgiving Can Drive that Foran does every year. The canned food goes to families in need who deserve a good meal on Thanksgiving. This drive is important because not everyone is fortunate enough to spend the holiday surrounded by love and food. Thanksgiving is a day about giving thanks and being grateful, participating in this drive is a way to do that for many.
The community also participates in the yearly Turkey Trot, which is a 5k to raise money for various charities in need. It’s hosted by the Milford High School Booster Club. The charity event is family friendly and a way to give back to the community.
Thanksgiving is a day where most families gather to enjoy quality time and food. Many people in Milford celebrate their holiday by attending the annual Foran vs. Law Football Game.
Freshman Maddy Queiroz says, “Every year my family and I go to the football game, and then eat an early dinner together after.”
The game this year is at Foran, and brings in a usual large crowd of people who grew up in Milford.
The game also has an important halftime show, spotlighting performances from cheerleaders and students in the band.
Senior Lindsay Wiederhold says, “For the past couple of years I have been performing in the band at the Thanksgiving game. Afterwards, my family and I will go to New York and spend time with my cousins and extended family.”
Wiederhold is one of the many traveling places this holiday season. According to the Bureau of Transportation, people traveling for the holiday amount to roughly 50 million each year.
Many staff members also have their own traditions.
History teacher Mr. Dooling says, “I plan on going over to my parents house with all of my immediate family and having dinner all together.”
Dooling also states, “I’m especially excited for my mom’s homemade stuffing and sweet potatoes.”
Turkey, stuffing, green beans, sweet potatoes, and more are to many what Thanksgiving is about. However, the day is special for many different reasons, and each family has their own customs and traditions to make the holiday memorable.
