As many have noticed, positive post-it notes have been plastered onto lockers, doors, and walls around Foran. The SAVE Promise club took it upon themselves to stay after school hours to fill sticky notes with optimistic words of affirmation.
Ms. Melissa Kaminski, a co-advisor of the club, gives some insight into the club behind the messages.
“The SAVE Promise Club brings positivity by organizing events, kindness workshops, anti-bullying campaigns, community service projects, and encouraging students to actively contribute to compassionate school culture.” M. Kaminski states.
While teachers and administration always strive to promote a positive and comfortable environment for their students, exercising skills daily by giving helpful feedback and creating a safe space for everyone, these sticky notes are one way for the student body to give back to the community as a whole.
These loose leaf pieces of paper were “Inspired by a desire to create a tangible and visible way for students to share positive messages and kindness with each other, to try and promote a more supportive and inclusive environment at school.”
Some of the warm-hearted words that have been spread are, “Always Give Your Best,” “You Are Stronger Than You Think,” “Always Stay Kind,” “Make Someone Smile Today,” and so much more.
According to Joey Kaminski, a sophomore, the club has established a “close bond between all of us through the activities and projects…” and that she feels more encouraged to have kind thoughts and behaviors for everyone in the club.
Not only was this kindness communicated on walls in the hallway, but also on painted rocks. These rocks were created by those same students in the SAVE Promise Club. A few specifically say, “Dream Big,” “Have Courage and Be Kind,” “Love Yourself,” and “You are Enough.”
While this is the most recent small act of kindness spreading throughout the district, it’s definitely not the first. The Milford Public School system has made it a priority to enforce positive ideas throughout the buildings through campaigns, social media posts, fundraisers, etc.
Many may believe that it doesn’t matter the language they chose to use towards themselves and others, but, according to the Acenda Health Organization, when one “consciously chooses uplifting thoughts and beliefs…”, it can set the tone for one’s day as a whole.
Being surrounded by positive personas and words is scientifically proven to help one feel more productive and happier in general. This kind of environment within a school campus is important, especially further in the school year when students tend to feel overwhelmed with exams, friendships, and even just simple homework.
Input provided by Sophomore Sofia Karipidis, the positivity spread is a “great way to encourage a positive environment throughout our school.”
