It’s that time of year again when the air has a constant chill and the sun starts setting early. This can sometimes cause unwanted effects on skin, here’s a guide on how to stay healthy and glow all season long.
As the seasons change, so should one’s skincare routine to accommodate the new climate. Some differences between a winter or summer routine might be makeup, the weight or type of moisturizer, extra steps or removing steps to limit irritation, and ingredients to include in one’s selected products.
Cleanser:
The type of cleanser chosen depends highly on how one’s skin reacts to the elements. Winter can dehydrate the skin and cause it to feel sensitive. It’s recommended by CaroMont Health Organization to switch to a gentle, fragrance-free cleanser to not cause any irritation and still achieve glowy skin.
Moisturizer:
During the winter, the skin’s barrier can weaken. Because of this, it’s essential to find the right product to protect from the cold. Many dermatologists suggest looking for items with ingredients such as Glycerin, Hyaluronic Acid, and Aloe Vera. Glycerin is used in almost every moisturizer and is known for its ability to improve the skin barrier, while the other two ingredients are known for smoothing irritations.
Sunscreen:
While the sun may not be shining as much as in the summer, it’s still very important to apply sunscreen to protect the skin as one still experiences sun rays. From a scientific perspective, Mrs. Laura Donovan, a science teacher at Foran, says, “In the winter, the albedo (reflectivity) of the ground also plays a role because the Sun’s energy is more likely to reflect off of brighter, snow-covered surfaces than be absorbed by the ground.” So even in snowy conditions with chilly air, remember to consistently use sunscreen.
Lip Care:
Dry, cracked lips is a very common symptom of chilly weather. According to Cleveland Health Organization, it’s a combination of both cold air outside and the dry heat inside that create the perfect opportunity for chapped lips. Some suggested ways to remedy it are finding the right type of chapstick, one packed with helpful ingredients like shea butter, mineral oil, and beeswax. All of these ingredients help sooth and create a barrier from cold wind.
Clothing:
One of the most important things to be aware of during the winter season is irritating clothing and fabrics. Dermalogica UK says that “dry conditions may be responsible for itchy sensations”, so it’s key to pick clothing that avoids these common problems. Some tips to keep in mind;
- Choose soft, breathable materials like cotton or silk
- Wear layers
- Wear light-weight and easily removable clothing to not overheat indoors
Self-Care
Skin health starts within how one takes care of themselves. This can appear in many ways, like staying hydrated. Donovan states “People sometimes think because we sweat more in the summer that we need more hydration in the summer than in the winter. However, it is equally as important to keep our bodies hydrated in the winter and in the summer.” Drinking water keeps skin plump, bright, and soft. Another way can be to eat healthier, focusing on having a rounded diet filled with vegetables that provide missing nutrients from the sun.
