Every morning, students at Foran watch the morning news, but most students don’t think about what goes into the making of it. This article explores behind the scenes of how the daily news broadcast is produced, where students work tirelessly to bring you the latest updates and stories of Foran.
First, the team has to decide what will be featured on each news broadcast.
“Oftentimes people will come to us with things they would like featured on the news. But there are also times where some things are time-sensitive, and we cover that to make sure things have publicity on time,” says Zach Dillon, a well known student on the Foran news.
Zach explains that broadcasts attract attention to new aspects of the school or new people.
Another main part of the broadcast is the equipment and making sure that it is ready to go for the broadcast. Many different types of equipment are used for different aspects of the broadcast and they all have different purposes.
“We have a larger camera to film the broadcast itself, along with a microphone called a Snowball. It’s often used by people who stream or speak publicly,” Dillon explains.
They also have handheld microphones and smaller, more portable cameras that are used for the segments in the news including interviews and sports events, which are filmed around the school.
The process isn’t all smooth sailing, and many challenges come with filming the morning news. One of their main challenges is making sure people are on the same page at all times, which can be hard because everyone has a different job.
“We all have to make sure the timing is right, and the right shots are on the screen. That’s probably the biggest challenge we are undergoing right now,” explains Dillon.
TV Studio student Joseph Kerzner explained that many things have to be shot again because something wasn’t right.
There are also many other people behind the scenes that help with the making of the broadcast.
“But who often doesn’t get as much credit is the person in the control room. They make sure the mic and camera work, while also providing the background images and video,” says Dillon.
In conclusion, diving behind the scenes of the school news broadcast reveals the dedication, teamwork, and creativity that drive its success. From planning to on-the-spot problem-solving, each member plays a vital role in bringing the news to the school.
