Baseball is a sport that has long been a favorite American pastime, all the way from tee ball to the Major Leagues.
The game of baseball requires players with certain characteristics: they need to be able to work together, be flexible, and be resilient.
Foran Baseball Coach Garret Walker reflects, “We have had to ask players to step into roles they may not have been expecting to be in, but our guys have remained resilient and have pushed themselves to overcome the grueling nature of the season. We will see our best baseball ahead.”
Having this mindset is important for the long season ahead. Many of the players and coaches set goals coming into the season. A common one between both players and coaches is to make the postseason.
Walker says, “We have accomplished our goal of qualifying for the State Tournament and have set our sights on improving ourselves each day.”
The boys have completed this goal with a 11-6 record and are looking forward to the state tournament. With players around the diamond contributing their all, this team is primed to make an impact in some way.
Senior captain Kasen Lanese is one of the pitchers for the Lions. As a captain, he has a responsibility to bring the team together.
Lanese says, “I enjoy being on a team because it gives us the ability to work toward a common goal.”
Junior shortstop Vincent Hine reflects on his goals. One of them is to win the state championship. This goal is not only Hine’s but the entire team’s.
Team bonding is a big part of any team. Having a player who cares about the team and themselves is huge on the baseball field.
Hine says, “Something I think sets our team apart from others is that we all have each other’s backs, and we are all great friends.”
Sophomore catcher Kyle Viesselman reflects on his team and personal goals, saying, “As a team, our main goal is to win a state championship. We strive daily to improve and work towards a state championship ring. Individually I am trying to work towards a division one scholarship.”
With trust in one another and similar big goals, everyone feels comfortable and plays the best they can. This brotherhood they formed allows many to feel welcomed and involved with the team no matter what their role is.
The Lions’ next chance to come together on the field is May 13, when they play Shelton High School in Shelton.
