Students at Foran are rallying around the newly formed pickleball club, offering a fresh and exciting way to stay active and connect with peers.
Pickleball as a sport has grown in popularity, leading to Milford opening the doors to its very first pickleball facility this past year and people lining recreational courts waiting to play.
Starting initially this year as an entertaining summer activity for the teachers in the math department, the group has expanded rapidly to include students.
Pickleball Club President, Senior Julia O’Connell, approached Ms. Abbigail Blanchard with the idea of bringing the sport to her peers after hearing about the math department.
Blanchard explains that she was very excited by this idea, with the mindset, “Yes we have to do this.”
Now meeting after school every Monday this fall, the club intends on promoting physical activity and community involvement for everyone.
While participating is bound to increase one’s socialization as they navigate the sport, according to MUSU Health, playing pickleball and other racket sports helps with hand-eye coordination. This is a very important skill for teens to have as they’re growing up, especially when learning how to drive and cook.
The club invites everyone, regardless of past experience, to come try out the club. Blanchard believes that, “Everyone is able to play pickleball.”
Due to the weather, the club may slow down during the winter, but Blanchard hopes they can meet inside some days in Foran’s gym.
