Randy Colin (Miss Randy) is a hard-working, single mother who works as the bake shop teacher for Foran High School. She has a passion for cooking and baking, as it’s been a big part of her life.
She went to college for six years and she got an associate’s degree in liberal arts, a bachelor of fine arts, a BFA in filmmaking, and a master’s degree in integrative health and healing. Miss Randy didn’t always want to be a culinary teacher.
Before she came to Foran High School, she worked as a professional chef. When she returned to work after she had her son, she realized she wasn’t the type of parent she wished she was. Miss Randy didn’t get to spend the amount of time she wanted to with her son because of all the demands of being a chef.
She wanted to find a way to do what she loved while still having time for her child, so becoming a teacher was the answer. People around her would always tell her that she would be a great teacher. This would allow her to share her passion for cooking with her students by teaching them new life skills. Miss Randy believes that ¨Your path takes you to where you should be, and my path sent me to teaching and I’m happy it did.¨
The change from a chef to a culinary and bake shop teacher allowed her to spend more time with her son and help others learn the life skills of cooking. Miss Randy wants all of her students to learn the basics of cooking through her class.
She finds explaining everything slowly to her class is the most effective way of teaching. She wants the people who take her class to always try their best, and even if they mess up they should take that as a way to improve.
Miss Randy makes sure that all students are comfortable while in her class. Junior Nathan Berndlmaier states, “Miss Randy is a nice teacher who’s fun to be around.¨ The atmosphere makes it easier for him to understand what’s happening in class. Berndlmaier also says, ¨This class has helped me learn how to follow instructions accurately and efficiently.¨
Junior Owsley Quinn states, ¨Bake Shop has a very chill vibe. It´s a stress-free class where you can go with the flow.¨ She also said that Miss. Randy has taught her the importance of measurements and following directions. She learned that the food quality can get ruined if you mess up the measurements.
Miss Randy believes in an ‘I can do it’ attitude and she instills that in her students. “No matter what I put in front of them, I want them to have the confidence that they can do it.”
