Do you notice yourself feeling down during the snowy seasons? As the weather changes, emotions, and energy levels may change.
January can feel heavy after the excitement of the holidays, but it’s the perfect time to reset and focus on yourself. From creating a daily routine you love to prioritizing sleep and staying active, there are simple ways to shake off the winter gloom. Small steps, like spending time with friends or practicing gratitude can boost your mood and help you start the year strong. High school might be busy, but self-care is the key to staying happy and balanced.
Foran senior, Skylar Hacker states, “Staying active during the winter time is so helpful to me, going to the gym with my friends or going for a run is so much fun”.
Exercise is an effective way to improve mental health in addition to physical fitness. Regular exercise releases endorphins, the “feel-good” chemicals that lower tension and anxiety. Additionally, it can enhance mood, self-esteem, and concentration.
AP Psychology teacher Mr. Todd Williams states, “As for proven habits to help, exercise and eating healthy are the biggest recommendations. Meeting up with other people/socializing face to face would be another.”
Social interactions improve brain health and provide a feeling of security and belonging.
Hailey Cahill, a senior at Foran explains, “During the Seniors Helping Seniors activity I had a lot of fun. It was nice to take a break from school, talk, and have fun with my friends.”
Socializing is important for mental health because it helps us feel connected and supported. Talking to friends or family about how we feel can help us deal with stress and tough times. Talking to loved ones or trusted friends about your thoughts and feelings can help you feel calmer and less stressed. Gaining perspective is also beneficial since other people can provide answers on issues that would seem overwhelming when handled alone. Emotional support increases resilience by establishing a network of people who are available to listen and understand.
