Ever since 1977 when the first Star Wars movie released the saga has followed a routine when it came to releasing movies. Generally, Star Wars movies would release in trilogies that followed one consistent story. In 2012, when Disney bought Lucasfilm and with it the right to the Star Wars franchise they began planning innovative and new ways to release Star Wars movies alongside the traditional trilogies. The first one of these standalone Star Wars movies will release in December and will change the Star Wars franchise forever. Star Wars: Rogue One: A Star Wars Story features a story that takes place before Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope and plans to captivate the imaginations of Star Wars fans and people who have never seen the series alike.
Starring Felicity Jones as Jyn Erso, Rogue One releases on December 16, 2016. Rogue One also features the return of the most well known and infamous Star Wars villain: Darth Vader. To Star Wars fans, the only thing better than Darth Vader being back in a movie is that his original voice actor James Earl Jones will be returning to provide his classic voice. Junior, Matteo Menta says that “The new movie is exciting and will change what we know about Star Wars!” In the original Star Wars movie the rebels use the plans for the Death Star to try and destroy it. Star Wars: Rogue One takes place before the original and is about the rebels who secured the plans to the Death Star. Even though the movie takes place right before a movie we have already seen, the movie will add new types of aliens, planets, and technology for fans to marvel over.
As of now, it is unknown how this new type of Star Wars movie will perform, however the movie itself is already exciting fans. One student, Aaron Miller says, “I’m not sure if I will see it in theatres because i’m not really a Star Wars fan. Rogue One is also not the only standalone Star Wars movie on the horizon, Disney plans to release a new Star Wars movie every year leading up to 2020. From 1977 to the present day the Star Wars franchise has gathered millions of fans and it doesn’t seem like it is going to stop now.
