Every year for the past five decades, National Apple Month has been around during the month of October. This month is a time for celebration for one of the world’s favorite fruits.
Apples have been around for over 10,000 years being one of the most consumed fruits. Originating in Kazakhstan in central Asia, it made its way across Europe and the seas to America.
This month was created in order to increase and help enhance awareness and the usage of apples across the world.
A month to celebrate apples may come as a surprise to many, however, culinary teacher Miss. Randy Colin said, “I am aware of it! It seems like there is a month to celebrate many foods”
There are many different ways to celebrate this month; from apple picking with friends and family to cooking/baking with them.
Lyman Orchards located in Middlefield, CT is a very popular orchard where many people go to pick their own apples.
According to Lyman Orchards website, “Lyman Orchards has 30,000 apple trees spread over 100 sprawling acres. We grow 27 varieties of apples.”
Many students go apple picking every year with their friends or families. Senior Joseylne Cruz goes apple picking each year with her family.
Cruz says, “Every year I usually go apple picking with my family at Lyman Orchard farms, it’s a fun tradition to do during the fall season. We usually all wear flannels together and take family pictures!”
While also enjoying picking apples, Randy likes to make many different pastries in her free time and in class with her students.
Colin states, “I like to prepare apple pies with warm autumn spices, like cinnamon nutmeg, and a tiny pinch of clove. I also enjoy making apple crumb coffee cake as well.”
Colin goes on to mention in Intro to Culinary they prepare apple crisp and in Bakeshop, apple pie is a favorite.
From being baked in a sweet treat or just alone apples are enjoyed by many people. Senior Jaiden Johnson says, “Apples are my favorite fruit. They are perfect for a quick snack!”
In agreement with her, Senior Olivia Jones also enjoys having an apple flavored snack!
Jones says, “My absolute favorite dessert is apple pie! I always have some whenever it’s fall.”
According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture apples are the most popular fruit in the country with about each person consuming about 27 pounds a year.
With apples being so popular they are more than deserving of a month to celebrate them.
