For hundreds of years, high schools around the world have created yearbooks as a way to reminisce the memories they make in high school. Having a reminder to the most significant periods in someone’s life [high school] is a way to cherish memories forever.
Over the last 10 years, there has been a yearbook class here at Foran taught by Mrs. Meghan Benson, where students are able to create their school’s yearbook. Different from other classes, students are allowed to work together. By learning from each other, they are able to create the best yearbook they can.
Benson states, “It’s a very different class than students typically take in high school, it’s very interactive and students are able to go out into the school community to take pictures and gather quotes from their peers.”
By having a say in what goes into the yearbook, students gain new chances to involve themselves and their friends.
Student involvement in the creation of the yearbook allows them the chance to personalize something that holds most of their high school memories.
Benson continues, “Students also get to decide for themselves what is included in the yearbook so it’s a great opportunity to personalize the year and help capture everyone’s memories for the future.”
Editors of the yearbook are very crucial and important to the success of making a yearbook. Much thought and creativity goes into the process, which can be very exciting for students.
Senior Yearbook Editor Lindsay Wiederhold says, “I love that I can create spreads and write stories about important parts of the year and talk to people in different grades in order to get quotes from them. It makes the whole experience even more exciting!”
Yearbooks aren’t just for upperclassmen however, there are always many ways that underclassmen are also incorporated into a yearbook, which makes the whole experience appealing for everybody.
Wiederhold continues, “…even though the seniors are leaving and buying them to remember their final year here, the underclassmen are also featured with their own pages that allow them to have their own memories in the yearbook.”
Much effort is put into the yearbook and is very appreciated by yearbook staff when they are purchased.
Senior staff member Valeria Juliao says, “I think people should buy a yearbook because the process and the effort that goes into it is so worthwhile, and it’s so fun seeing all of our work come together at the end.”
