September marks National Recovery Month. More than just the start of fall, it’s a time to acknowledge the strength, resilience, and hope that can be found in recovery.
Coming back from an injury can be a long and difficult process, and this month serves as a reminder that progress, no matter how small, is worth celebrating.
Foran students remind us that every step forward, whether it’s returning to sports, walking without pain, or regaining confidence, is a victory.
Athletic Director Mr. Jeffrey Raucci states, “Experiences like this mold people into who they are and create resilience. Only makes you stronger.”
As Raucci recovers from his ACL injury, he remains positive and helps support others who are going through the same or similar obstacles as he is.
National Recovery Month shines a spotlight on these moments of perseverance, reminding students that healing is not just about getting back to normal, but about discovering new strengths along the way.
During a lacrosse scrimmage in March of 2024, senior Shea Pangu tore her meniscus when she pivoted weirdly while running, causing her knee to shift awkwardly.
Pangu says, “After surgery, for the first week, I was bedridden, I couldn’t get up by myself, shower by myself, or do any simple tasks I wanted to do. Then, in recovery, I had to use crutches to travel everywhere, and it was much harder to get from place to place and do things such as use the stairs in my house or go to the bathroom.”
Athletes suffering injuries not only struggle with the impact on their sport and performance, but also have to deal with the effects on their day-to-day life.
The key to overcoming these hard times lies in the mindset one brings to themselves and their situation. It is essential to focus primarily on the progress being made rather than the toll it takes on one’s lifestyle.
Sophomore Tatum Deitelbaum suffered a high ankle sprain while participating in her first scrimmage of the 2025 girls soccer season.
Deitelbaum states, “I’ve been missing out on every practice and game, but I am staying positive by showing up to every practice and game while giving myself time to heal.”
By sharing their experiences, Foran students inspire one another to stay patient, positive, and determined throughout the road to recovery.
