Disney Plus is a streaming service that was released on November 19, 2019. It has come a long way ever since its launch. Disney + streams properties such as Marvel, Star Wars and Pixar allowing one to watch all their content for free at home with a subscription. You can sign up for Disney Plus for either $6.99 a month, $69.99 a year or the Disney Bundle which includes Disney Plus, Hulu and ESPN + for just $12.99 a month.
Starting this year 2021, Disney + will be releasing new tv series for Marvel Studios and the Star Wars franchises. Disney Plus will kick off the year with the release of Marvel’s Studios first live-action tv series WandaVision. This show will introduce the return of Elizebeth Olzen and Paul Bettany as Wanda Maximoff (The Scarlet Witch) and Vision. This show is styled like a classic sitcom with strange occurrences implying the two Avengers are trapped in an alternate reality as they believe they are living a suburban life of their own. Senior Cole Heitman said, “I think Marvel is as popular as it is because it has been around for a long time and has also built up a huge cinematic universe with interesting characters.” This show premiered on January 15 with its first two episodes upon its release day.
Along with the release of “WandaVison” there are two more Marvel Cinematic Universe television shows coming out in 2021, The Falcon and the Winter and Loki. Senior Anthony Cascella shared “ I think Marvel is important because it told me tales of heroes rising up against the impossible odds and saving the day, not for reward because it’s right. Marvel showed me the heroes I wanted to become.” The Falcon and the Winter Soldier is scheduled to release on March 19, 2021. The series will take place after the events of Avengers: Endgame (2019). The Falcon (Anthony Mackie) being handed the mantle of Captain America, he teams up with the Winter Soldier (Sebastian Stan) in a global adventure as they fight against super villain Baron Zemo and having to deal with the U.S government preferred choice of the next Captain America John Walker known as in the comics U.S Agent.
As for the god of mischief and brother of Thor he’s getting his own series Loki which is played by Tom Hiddleston and is set to release in May 2021. The Loki plot will follow events based on a scene in Avengers: Endgame, he will pop up throughout human history and will explore time travel between previous Marvel Cinematic Universe events and become an unlikely influencer on historical events and shifts to the current timeline. Senior Josh Bernardo shared, “They’re iconic characters brought to the big screen and to Disney Plus. Characters like Spider-Man are easily recognized by the common person.”
Many fans of the Disney Plus service are also looking forward to the new upcoming Star Wars series. Cacella said, “There’s a Boba Fett show coming out slated to come out this year and I’m very excited for that, Boba Fett has always been very mysterious in Star Wars so seeing his character explored in-depth would be a treat to watch.” Obi Wan and The Book of Boba Fett is scheduled to release sometime this year, it is unclear at the moment of its release date and what the plot of the new series will be about, however, a few details about the show have been released.
Obi Wan will take place 10 years after Revenge of The Sith and nine years before Star Wars: A New Hope, in an era after the Jedi Order has been all but wiped out. Ewan McGregor will star in the show as the known character and Jedi Obi-Wan Kenobi as well as Hayden Christensen will return with his character of Sith lord DarthVader. The Book of Boba Fett will take place after Disney’s Plus current Star Wars series The Mandalorian and back to the original trilogy. More details about these shows will be released in the weeks and months ahead.
Star Wars is also getting more television series as well, the list of titles it includes is Ahsoka, Rangers of the New Republic, Andor, The Bad Batch, Visions, Lando, The Acolyte, and A Droid Story for years to come.
There are many new shows as well for Marvel and Stars to be released over the next years ahead. Marvel is releasing nine more series and a television special as the years come this includes: Hawkeye, MoonKnight, What if…?, She Hulk, Armor Wars, Ironheart, Ms. Marvel, I am Groot, Secret Invasion and The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special. Cascella shared his excitement for upcoming marvel shows “On the Marvel side, probably Moon Knight, I’ve been following him in the comics on and off. It would be nice to see another important character added to the Marvel Cinematic Universe.”
