As the holidays approach, people prepare for the season by making at-home dishes that are both easy to make and affordable!
Freshman Grace Weber makes holiday chocolate that is both tasty and sweet.
She says, “Baking with my mom makes me feel like a kid again.”
Cooking with friends and family relaxes and boosts many people’s moods.
Freshman Minka Kerrison’s family makes an apple pie. Kerrison describes it as “tart and very delicious.”
Her recipe for her apple pie consists of:
Step one: Mix ½ cup of sugar, three tbsp of flour, and spices (½ cup of brown sugar, one tsp ground cinnamon, ¼ tsp ground ginger, and ¼ tsp ground nutmeg), then set aside.
Step two: In another bowl mix six apples (sliced) and one tbsp lemon juice.
Step three: Add the apple mixture and sugar mixture together and toss so the apples are evenly coated.
Step four: Line the bottom of the pie tray with the crust and fill it with apple filling (also dot it with 1 tbsp of butter) then add the rest of the crust to the top.
Step five: Trim and seal the edges of the pie crust, beat the egg white until it foams up, and brush it over the pie crust.
Step six: Cover the edge loosely with foil. Bake at 375 degrees for 25 minutes.
Step seven: Remove foil and bake for 20 – 25 minutes until whenever it turns golden brown.
Step eight: Let it cool and serve with ice cream or whatever toppings you like and enjoy.
Mrs. Cafferty says “I love making snickerdoodle cookies with my classes. It brings a festive atmosphere to the room!”
The culinary classes at Foran during the holiday time make snickerdoodle cookies in Mrs. Cafferty’s culinary classes. The snickerdoodle cookies can serve up to 36 people.
Kerrsion describes snickerdoodle cookies as, “buttery and sweet with a touch of cinnamon.”
There is always an option to shop locally for holiday treats. Sunshine Ceramics Studio has hot cocoa mugs that come out in early December, which then go to Scratch Baking for them to sell.
Frosty Twist has a gingerbread ice cream flavor and many other restaurants have holiday menus, too.
Buying, creating, or sharing seasonal treats is a simple fun way to spread holiday cheer and make everyone’s day a little brighter.
