According to researchers, at least 35-43% of people don’t pass their permit test on the first try. In order to avoid being part of this percentage, you need to learn how to properly prepare for your permit test.
The learner’s permit is a prerequisite for obtaining a driver’s license. Unlike the license test, the permit test focuses more on knowledge and capability rather than physical driving skills.
Sophomore Justin Morton says, “I want my permit so that I can eventually drive around with my friends to certain destinations.”
The permit test consists of completion of the Connecticut Work Zone Safety Course, a vision test, and 25 questions, where the applicant is required to get at least an 84% to pass. Getting more than four of these questions wrong results in failure of the test.
The Workzone Safety Course is required to be completed before taking the permit test, and focuses on things like raising awareness of safe driving. This includes navigating lane shifts, obeying flaggers, eliminating distractions, and understanding punishments for violations of the law. Basic online awareness courses typically range between 20-45 minutes, while more detailed and comprehensive courses for workers or supervisors can take up two or two-and-a-half hours.
There are requirements set before you can take the permit test. You need to be at least 16 years of age to take the test, as well as pay a $40 testing fee and a $19 learner’s permit fee in the state of Connecticut.
Studying to prepare for test day is important, as the test will feature multiple choice questions about topics such as rules of the road, road signs and markings, safe driving practices, traffic signals, alcohol/drug awareness, and specific restrictions that 16-17 year olds must follow.
Sophomore Emily Speringo, who has already passed her permit test, says, “I got nervous in the test because you can’t go back to previous questions and I was worried I had already gotten 5 wrong, but I only got 2 wrong.”
When taking the test, you’ll be faced with a vision test which makes sure you meet the minimum sight standards, generally 20/40 acuity or better. Then you will take the knowledge test. The questions included in this test are randomly selected from a pool of 300 driving questions; however, you can study these questions in many different ways.
The app store features a large selection of apps that you can use to prepare for the questions your state included in the test. These apps are available upon searching “DMV Practice Test,” in the App Store or Google Play Store. Multiple options that cater to your state’s test will appear. Some apps are more effective than others, so try multiple to find one that matches your study preferences and gives you the most practice options.
Another study method is reviewing the official state driver’s handbook. You can find this online by just looking it up. It is very useful for review on road signs, right-of-way rules, and alcohol-related laws.
Creating flashcards with this information is also a great way to improve your memorization of what you’re studying to increase your chances of doing well on the test.
The Next Street Driving Schools staff comments, “To study, you have to be ready for everything and should study the DMV Manual.”
To be successful, it’s recommended that you practice daily for about 30-60 minutes using whichever method you want to study. You should start studying 1-2 weeks before the test, but if you want to do the best you can, starting even a month before the test would give you enough time to be fully prepared for your test.
