Keeping Milford Warm

A Charity for the People: Keeping Milford Warm organization poses outside of City Hall with Mayor Ben Blake. November 21, 2023.

Keeping Milford Warm is a charity organization that aims to provide funding to low-income families in the city of Milford, Connecticut, to help them keep warm during the winter. The charity helps pay for heating in these families’ homes to ensure that they are able to stay warm and safe during the cold winter months.

The charity was founded nine years ago by Kevin C. McGrath & The Milford Kiwanis Club, and since then, it has been able to raise a total of $250,000 to help families in need. The money is raised through a variety of means, including donations from local businesses, community fundraising events, and individual donations from concerned citizens.

Recently, they held their 9th Annual Holiday Benefit Dinner & Silent Auction. The event was able to raise around $30,000 in funds, going towards these less fortunate Milford families.

Executive Director of the organization, Erin Morabito, believes that warm homes are a privilege all Milford residents deserve. “Our mission is to make sure that no one in Milford has to choose between putting food on their table or heating their home.” Morabito states.

The charity’s mission is especially important given the high cost of heating, which can be a significant burden for low-income families. Connecticut has one of the most expensive energy rates in the nation. According to the Connecticut State Government official website, “On average, residents pay: $166/month for electricity, $76/month for heating oil, and $39/month for natural gas.”

Without the help of Keeping Milford Warm, many of these families would struggle to afford heating, putting themselves and their children at risk of cold-related illnesses and other issues.

Mayor Ben Blake has recognized the importance of Keeping Milford Warm’s mission and has been a strong supporter of the charity. In a statement, Mayor Blake said, “There is a need in the City of Milford more than ever to provide those resources to folks in need for a warm winter.”

One of the driving factors in the charities success has been the continued help of volunteers, donors, and community partners.

Since its establishment in 2013, the foundation has garnered many corporate, warmth, and appreciation sponsors. organizations such as the Milford Bank, Napoli Nissan, Napoli Kia, and Stonebridge restaurant, all located in right in Milford.

“Keeping Milford Warm is a completely non-profit community service program. Every dollar we raise goes directly towards supporting Milford families and individuals in need.” The charity officially states on their website.
