As the holiday season approaches, finding the perfect gift can feel overwhelming. Why not make this year more special by giving something handmade?
Miss Dotson, the art teacher at Foran High School, encourages students to leave their comfort zone and create a project. She emphasizes how handmade items, crafted with thought and care, carry more meaning than anything store-bought. With simple materials and imagination, anyone can create unique, personalized gifts that leave a lasting impression.
Dotson states, “I think ornaments are a great way to ease into DIY gifts. There are lots of tutorials on YouTube and Instagram.”
Making something by hand helps develop and showcase new skills or talents, whether it’s knitting, painting, woodworking, or crafting, which also enhances the meaning behind the gift.
Dotson has overlooked the different types of gifts she has given and the reactions she has gotten from them. She has found that her DIY stained glass and jewelry have been loved the most. A DIY gift is uniquely tailored to the recipient. It shows time was taken to consider their likes, needs, and personalities, creating something just for them.
There are various artistic presents available. There is also a different type of present for those who struggle with crafts. Baked goods can warm a loved one’s heart.
Culinary teacher Miss Randy Colin states, “I’ll bake something or surprise them with dinner. Sometimes, I’ll go to The Dollar Store and make a wonderful spa basket. My friends and family will send a text or card, letting me know how my gift made them feel”
Randy stresses the importance of knowing the person’s interests or hobbies. She believes that a thoughtful DIY gift is the best gift.
DIY gifts often carry more emotional weight and thoughtfulness compared to store-bought presents. They can help family members or friends connect while giving an affordable gift.
Randy suggests, “I always go for thoughtful gifts. It’s important to be a good listener. That’s where I get my ideas from.”
Baskets with the person’s favorite candles, chocolate, candies, soaps, and more can be an easy and memorable gift.
