Valentine’s Day is cherished around the world as a time for couples to celebrate their affection, from gifting roses and heartfelt cards to sparkling promise rings. However February isn’t just about romance; it’s also the perfect time to celebrate friendship with Galentine’s Day on February 13.
Junior Bella Lau, who has celebrated Galentine’s Day shares, “It is important for those, especially women, to realize how important girlhood and friendship is. Some women don’t have men to support them during this time of year and being able to convey heartfelt appreciation towards one another is sometimes all a woman needs.”
Galentine’s Day is all about gathering with your best friends, acknowledging the joys of friendship and celebrating each other with love and support. It’s a celebration of women and young girls uplifting each other, with laughter, kindness, and lots of sparkle.
According to several websites including Country Living, it started in February 2010 based on an episode of Parks and Rec, where Leslie Nope, Amy Poehler’s character, introduces Galentine’s Day as a wonderful day where women celebrate women.
In the episode, she says, “Oh, it’s only the best day of the year. Every February 13th my lady friends and I leave our husbands and our boyfriends at home and we just come and kick it breakfast style. Ladies celebrating ladies. It’s like Lilith Fair, minus the angst. Plus frittatas.”
Bella Lau says, “Even those who do have men to celebrate Valentine’s Day with can also be with their girls. Anyone can celebrate this holiday.”
Planning a Galentine’s Day party can be as exciting as it is heartwarming, and the options of decorations and crafts are endless. From baking valentines themed cookies, enjoying some karaoke, having a movie marathon watching classic rom-coms, Galentines is a day for men or women to share a day filled with joy and laughter.
Senior Alana Duguay shares, “My favorite memory was the time I spent with my friends and taking pictures in front of a fun backdrop.”
Junior Lexi Kochanowicz, who has celebrated Galentine’s Day multiple times, shares, “My dream Galentine’s Day party would include karaoke. The best decorations have to be pink and red balloons and heart-related decor to show the love for your girls.”
