The sound in the ice rink was sharp and cold, as hockey players skated on the ice, and the feeling of the coldness of the air. While sharing the love for the same sport, that’s how the Girls Hockey team felt during their games this season.
While playing hockey, it is important to have good communication skills on and off the ice.
Building a community and having good communication can sometimes be hard with teammates in different living areas. All the girls go to different schools, for example, Foran, Law, and Hamden High School.
Foran Freshman student Ava Schoeman states that, “As a team, we do team bonding with each other, whether it’s prank wars or just getting to practice or games early to hang out as a group. Overall, it’s a really fun team.” The girls have many pasta parties and hangouts to build bigger connections with each other and the community. Their bonding skills off-ice can translate to how they play on-ice.
It had been a bit of a challenge for the girls since they had lost a great class of seniors, but they are learning and overcoming the challenge. They had been learning to play with fewer numbers.

Recently, the girls’ hockey team saw a few losses, but has since come back strong, winning their last two games against Ridgefield and the West Haven Sacred Heart Academy Co-op. The team felt really proud and happy afterward, celebrating their success.
Some future goals that they have for themselves are to win the state championships and also win their conference, or at least get as far as they can. It takes them a lot of practice and determination to get there. The girls are preparing by having more practices, doing new drills every practice, and improving their communication skills. Even though they might not see each other during school, they do what they can to maintain their strong bonds, strengthening their friendships with one another.
Hamden High Senior and Captain Ava Martin shares that “We are all family and best friends, and that is definitely the key to winning on ice because our endless support drives one another to be the best versions of ourselves.” Together, they motivate and inspire one another to push harder and achieve their greatest potential.
