According to the Connecticut Interscholastic Athletic Conference (CIAC) official website, statistics report that 78.9% of total Foran athletes participate in at least one high school sport.
35 of those student-athletes at Foran High School have taken on this challenge of playing three sports year-round for the Lions. These athletes are recognized for their talent and their commitment to representing the Foran community throughout the school year.
The feat of balancing both challenging classwork and being able to show up to practice, giving it their all every single day, shows how these tremendous athletes exemplify and excel.
From the first whistle on the football field to the last faceoff in lacrosse, Shane Trevethan is a member of the football, wrestling, and lacrosse teams.
Playing three physical sports in a 10-month period can have negative effects on the body, as having little to no break in between makes it very difficult to prepare.
“While I don’t have a lot of time in between football and wrestling, I try to prioritize early March for lacrosse to get my stick skills and face-offs cleaned up for the season,” remarks Trevethan.
Senior Gavin Conte balances soccer in the fall, basketball in the winter, and lacrosse in the spring. Moving from the endurance of the soccer field to the fast-paced tempo of the basketball court, and then to the precision and focus required on the lacrosse field.
Not only is Conte a standout on the field, but he is also among the top ranks in the classroom. Having no breaks in between athletic seasons leaves limited time for academic excellence, but Conte proves that wrong.
“I plan out what I’m going to do in advance, and I keep everything organized. I use a planner to remember everything, so I don’t forget everything I need to do,” states Conte.
Late nights studying, doing homework, and finishing projects all paid off for Conte, giving him many options for his future.
Junior Maddie Deldin is a once-in-a-lifetime athlete. Whether it’s the volleyball or basketball court, or the softball diamond, she sets herself apart from the others.

Being named to the all-Southern Connecticut Conference (SCC) basketball team and to the all-state softball team, Deldin brings her athleticism to Foran athletics year-round.
“I make sure to give myself rest days over the weekend while also fueling my body with a healthy diet to keep my energy up,” notes Deldin.
On a broader scale, the CIAC reported in 2023 that there were a total of 98,972 athletes across the conference, with roughly 9,000 of those athletes competing in more than one sport.
Balancing academics and athletics year-round is no easy task, yet Foran’s three-sport athletes continue to prove it can be done. Their dedication, preparation, and discipline allow them to compete at a high level while maintaining strong performances in the classroom.
Through long seasons, limited breaks, and constant training, these athletes represent the commitment and pride that define the Foran community.

Great article. Shane, Gavin, and Maddie are perfect examples of what it means to be a Foran Lion. Job well done by all.
