Balancing sports and school isn’t easy, but for three-sport athlete and senior Gavin Conte, hard work isn’t optional; it’s a way of life. Every practice, every game, and every assignment is approached with the same level of focus and determination. While many students would struggle to manage their time, Conte has mastered the art of discipline, proving that success comes from consistent effort both on and off the spotlight.
One of the qualities that sets Conte apart is the way he leads by example. Whether it is during a tough practice or in the final minutes of a close game, he is often the one encouraging his teammates to stay locked in and give their best effort. Instead of being the loudest voice in the gym or on the field, he lets his actions speak first, showing up early, staying late, and always giving full effort. This steady approach has earned him the respect of both his coaches and teammates.
History teacher Mr. Zachary Phelan, who teaches AP US Government & Politics, describes Conte as an exceptional student with consistent efforts and a great work ethic.
Phelan states, “He has a great sense of humor, a good attitude, and a contagious smile…when students are confused, they look to him for help because they know they can count on him.”
Phelan looks forward to seeing Conte’s post-high school success.
Beyond the classroom, Conte’s commitment is just as clear on the court and the field. As a three-sport athlete at Foran, he competes in basketball, lacrosse, and soccer, balancing three demanding seasons while maintaining strong academic performance.

His teammates say Conte brings the same focus and determination to athletics that he shows in the classroom. Sophomore basketball player, Tate Trevethan, described what it is like playing alongside him by explaining, “Conte is a great leader on and off the court. He always pushes his teammates to work harder when they don’t feel like it. He is physically and mentally tough.”
Throughout the year, Conte moves from one season to the next, transitioning from soccer in the fall, basketball in the winter, and lacrosse in the spring. Each sport requires different skills, strategies, and levels of endurance, but Conte approaches every season with the same commitment to improving himself and helping his team succeed.
Mr. Ian Kirkpatrick, the boys’ varsity basketball coach, stated, “Gavin made a positive impact on his teammates through his leadership, work ethic, and character. He consistently provided the coaching staff with thoughtful feedback and was someone we could always rely on. His presence elevated those around him and set a high standard that others looked up to and followed. He is a model student-athlete with a bright future ahead of him.”
Balancing three sports while staying on top of schoolwork requires strong time management and dedication. Practices, games, and homework often fill most of his day, but Conte continues to stay focused on both his academic and athletic responsibilities. As his senior year continues, he hopes to finish his final season strong and leave a positive impact on the teams he has been a part of.
Looking back on his experience as a student-athlete at Foran, Conte said, “I have definitely enjoyed my experience as a student-athlete at Foran. All of my coaches, teachers, and teammates have been extremely supportive of me throughout both my academic and athletic endeavors. Balancing all of this has definitely prepared me for my next chapter in college.”
