January is “Be Kind to Food Servers Month,” the perfect opportunity to recognize the hardworking cafeteria staff at Foran High School. These dedicated workers spend countless hours preparing and serving meals to students each day.
Director of Food Services for Milford Public Schools, Eileen Faustich explains the importance of showing gratitude, “Cafeteria staff work very hard “behind-the-scenes” to prepare fresh foods that students enjoy.”
While cafeteria staff don’t expect recognition, small acts of appreciation make a big difference in their day.
Faustich adds that these small gestures help staff stay motivated, making them more excited to come to work every day, even during challenging times.
Recently, staff shortages due to illness have only made their job more demanding. Despite these challenges, the cafeteria team continues to push forward, doing everything they can to make sure that meals are served on time and with a smile.
Zach Lund, a Junior at Foran says, “I appreciate all the hard work and effort that the food staff puts into preparing lunch. I make sure to say thank you to all of the food staff.”
Marybeth Salvato, the Kitchen Manager at Foran High School explains how students show their gratitude towards cafeteria staff, “The kids at Foran are super nice. They’re concerned when they don’t see a staff member–they know us by name. It makes us feel like we’re important to them and appreciated”
Salvato emphasizes how students at Foran go beyond just saying “thank you” by genuinely caring about the cafeteria staff. When they notice someone is missing and ask about them, it shows that the staff aren’t just workers but a real part of the school community. That kind of recognition reminds cafeteria staff that their work matters and that students truly appreciate what they do each day.
Faustich mentions that students can show their gratitude in simple ways, “Cafeteria staff feel appreciated when students smile and converse with staff on the serving line, such as sharing what they loved about a meal or side and letting them know you appreciate their effort.”
Whether it’s a simple “thank you” or a friendly conversation, small acts of gratitude can make a big impact on the hardworking staff who help keep students fed every day.
Another opportunity for students to express their gratitude is on May 2, 2025, which marks “School Lunch Hero Day.” This special day is another chance to recognize the work of the cafeteria staff and let them know they are appreciated.
