Valentine’s Day is often labeled a holiday for couples, but in reality, it’s become less about romance and more about celebrating the people you love.
From friendships and self-love to Galentine’s Day celebrations, students are finding creative ways to make February 14 meaningful, without the pressure of romance.
For many students, Valentine’s Day is about the connection. Some see it as a day to show appreciation, while others view it as just another day with a little extra kindness.
Many students believe this day does not need to be expensive to be meaningful. A kind message, spending time together, or simply feeling appreciated is enough.
Some people also feel that the holiday focuses too much on couples, which is why many choose to celebrate with friends or self-love.
Senior Ray Jackson states, “On Valentine’s Day, I like to spend time with friends or even be alone. Valentine’s Day doesn’t always need to be celebrated.”
Many will often look for gift ideas that fit a small budget. Affordable gifts can still be thoughtful and special.
Some popular low-cost gift ideas include: handwritten letters or cards, chocolates, printed photos or photo collages, small stuffed animals, or sharing homemade meals or desserts.
Senior Sawyer Miller explains, “Buying flowers and chocolates are easy and affordable gifts to give.”
A lot of students will agree that effort and thought matter more than the price of the gift.
According to USA Today, Valentine’s Day is a celebration of friendship, usually celebrated on February 13 or 14. It focuses on appreciating friends, especially among groups of girls, but anyone can celebrate.
Senior Caroline Geddes states, “I enjoy celebrating Galentine’s Day because I get to celebrate with friends and not only loved ones.”
Galentine’s Day helps students feel included and reminds them that love is not only romantic.

Students often celebrate Valentine’s Day in simple and realistic ways. Instead of expensive dinners, many choose activities that fit their schedules and budgets.
Miller also states, “I like to go to a nice dinner and spend time with loved ones.”
Other common ways couples can celebrate are going out for a casual meal, cooking or ordering food together, watching movies, and exchanging small gifts or notes.
For many couples, spending quality time together is more important than spending money.
Valentine’s Day does not have to be perfect or costly. Instead, it is often about feeling valued and staying connected while sharing small happy moments.
