The aroma of freshly prepared meals and the steady rhythm of the lunch rush mark a new chapter in Foran’s cafeteria as the second semester begins, welcoming new leadership behind the kitchen doors.
The Food Service staff bids farewell to Mary Beth Salvado and warmly welcomes Joanne Chow Yen, who has stepped into the role of Assistant Manager and Lead Cook.
Chow Yen’s journey at Foran began in an unexpected way. She first joined the school community as a substitute teacher, moving between classrooms and meeting new faces. This soon shifted when she met Salvado, who offered her a spot on her Food Service team, as a position was available.
Since 2023, Chow Yen has been a dedicated and familiar presence at Foran, working in a variety of roles, including cook and food preparer. In her new supervisor and management role, she now oversees the daily kitchen operations, such as ordering, organizing, and ensuring the team is ready to handle the day’s lunch waves, which can wind up being chaotic and stressful at times.
During this time, Chow Yen is continuing to help out with food serving and other tasks, as the kitchen is currently understaffed, but states that she believes that the kitchen has remained “efficient” and “work-driven” despite a lack of hands. She credits the team’s strong system and cooperation, noting that there are no major operational changes needed at this time.

Chow Yen’s favorite part of her job is that she has much more time to spend with her family.
“First and foremost, I am a mom,” states Chow Yen.
The roles with the Food Service department are found to be flexible, which allows everyone to balance work responsibilities with time for their loved ones. Chow Yen encourages anyone who has children within the school system and wants to work in the kitchen to apply.
Beyond scheduling, Chow Yen describes the kitchen environment as welcoming and supportive. She values working alongside her staff and enjoys interacting with students on a daily basis.
Chow Yen’s impact on the school community has not gone unnoticed. Members of the Foran community have expressed their appreciation for her leadership and dedication. School Dean Mr. Justin Zywocinski praised her efforts, noting that the work she has done so far has been both effective and deeply appreciated.
With her experience, commitment, and enthusiasm, Chow Yen is already proving to be a strong leader in the cafeteria—and a valued member of the community.
