300 pages, 100 days – that is what the yearbook staff is tasked with writing and publishing. Each year, hundreds of students purchase a yearbook without knowing what goes into making it.
The process begins with deciding on the theme. The year prior, the staff will develop ideas for the next year’s edition. At the start of the year, the staff will make their decision on what they want the layout and theme of the yearbook to be.
After the theme and layout are determined, they start the creation process. They begin by deciding the deadline, as this gives them a time frame for completing the yearbook. They then split the yearbook into the seasons and the sports seasons. They complete about 45 pages a month.
Once the theme and deadline are decided, the staff begin working on the cover. The cover of the yearbook needs to be perfect; it’s the first thing that you see when you pick up the yearbook.. Once they have a cover, they focus on the pages of the yearbook. They try to get photos of everyone, but seniors take priority.
Mrs. Shannon Worcester is the teacher who runs the yearbook class. Teaching this class is quite a bit different than a normal class. “The assignments are more creative, the students have a strict deadline, and the class is more laid back,” Worcester states.
Students in the class assume various roles to help make the process more efficient and smooth. Senior Michael Doyle is the editor-in-chief of the yearbook. His role is to make sure that everything is met on an appropriate deadline.
“Just making sure the deadline is on time cause I want to make the yearbook available for anyone and everyone, and we want to make sure it gets on time before school ends so everyone can get it in time to get it signed,” remarks Doyle on the pressure he faces.
Despite the laid-back culture of the class, students still face challenges in the creation process. “Expressing the many different personalities and interests in the student population [can be difficult],” senior Colin Monahan states.

Even though there are some challenging parts to the class, students still enjoy it. Senior Sean Fitzgerald stated, “I enjoy the laid-back atmosphere of the class and that I get to help the school.”
The yearbook staff enjoys the class and the work that they put into the yearbook. Although the timeframe and workload may be challenging, they push through and get their job done so that the students at Foran can have a yearbook in June. The yearbook can be purchased on this website for the price of $90. A copy of the yearbook can be purchased here.
